HELIUM LEAK DETECTION

Helium is used as a tracer because it penetrates small leaks rapidly. Helium has also the property of being non-toxic, chemically inert and present in the atmosphere only in minute quantities (5 ppm). Typically, a helium leak detector will be used to measure leaks in the range of 10−5 to 10−10 atm cc/sec.

We provide leak testing services in shop or on-site for a wide range of customer needs.  We can quickly locate even the smallest leaks in any pressure system, vacuum system or hermetic system.

VACUUM TESTING (OUTSIDE-IN)

In Vacuum testing, your part is evacuated with a separate pumping system for larger volumes, or within the detector itself for smaller volumes.  To locate a leak, helium is administered to the suspected leak sites of your part using a spray probe with an adjustable flow.

PRESSURE TESTING (INSIDE-OUT)

In Pressure Testing, your part is pressurized with helium or a mixture of helium and air.  To locate a leak, the potential leak sites of your part are scanned using a Sniffer Probe connected to the inlet of the leak detector.

TYPICAL EQUIPMENT TO BE TESTED

Vacuum furnaces, vacuum coating, electron microscopes, glove boxes, linear accelerators, electron beam and ion beam process equipment, semiconductor process equipment, laser processing

HELIUM LEAK DETECTORS CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS:

  • A spectrometer to detect the mass of helium
  • A vacuum system to maintain the pressure in the spectrometer
  • A mechanical pump to evacuate the part to be tested
  • Valves which enable the various stages of detection: evacuation, test & venting
